The minimum wage rate in Tasmania
The Fair Work Commission set the National Minimum Wage in the Annual Wage Review 2026, and it applies to employees in the national system from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2026. That is the same figure in every state. For the full rate history, junior table and what the award floors are, see minimum wage in Australia.
| Period | Before tax | After tax |
|---|---|---|
| Hourly | $26.44 | — |
| Weekly (38 hours) | $1,004.90 | $869.81 |
| Fortnightly | $2,009.80 | $1,739.62 |
| Annual (52 weeks) | $52,254.80 | $45,230 |
| Casual hourly (+25%) | $33.05 | — |
After-tax figures use the 2026-27 resident tax rates and the Medicare levy for a full-time adult, with the tax-free threshold claimed and no HECS-HELP debt. Income tax is set by the Commonwealth, so the take-home figure is identical in every state. Your employer also pays about $6,271 a year in super on top. Run your own hours through the take-home pay calculator.
Is there a Tasmanian minimum wage?
Tasmania splits the public sector in two: Tasmanian State Service employees remain in the state system, while local government employees are in the national system. Private-sector employees are in the national system.
Fair Work Ombudsman: “State public sector employees remain under the state system. Local government employees are covered by the national system.”
No separate Tasmanian minimum wage applies to private-sector employees, and Tasmanian local government employees are also in the national system, so the $26.44 National Minimum Wage and modern awards apply to them.
Tasmanian State Service employees remain in the state system. Their pay is set through State Service awards and agreements, which the Tasmanian State Service Industrial Relations unit publishes. We do not publish a state-system figure for them.
Most people are paid above the minimum anyway, under a modern award. Check your award’s rates or the pay rates by job, which apply the same way in Tasmania.
Under-21s and apprentices in Tasmania
Junior and apprentice pay for Tasmanian private-sector employees follows the national junior percentages or the scale in the relevant modern award.
| Age | % of adult | Hourly | Casual hourly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 16 | 36.8% | $9.73 | $12.16 |
| 16 | 47.3% | $12.51 | $15.64 |
| 17 | 57.8% | $15.29 | $19.11 |
| 18 | 68.3% | $18.06 | $22.58 |
| 19 | 82.5% | $21.82 | $27.28 |
| 20 | 97.7% | $25.84 | $32.30 |
| 21 and over | 100.0% | $26.44 | $33.05 |
These percentages apply only to employees with no award or agreement (National Minimum Wage Order 2026, cl 8.2). Awards set their own junior scales; see minimum wage by age, or go to a 16, 17 or 18 year old. Apprentice rates are covered in apprentice electrician pay.
TAS public holidays in the 2026-27 minimum wage year
9 whole-day public holidays fall between 1 July 2026 and 30 June 2027 in Tasmania. A full-time or part-time employee who has the day off on a day they would normally work is paid their base rate for those hours: at the minimum wage and a standard 38-hour week that is about $200.94 for the day. If you work the day, your award sets the penalty rate. Dates are from the state government’s own list; the TAS public holiday pay page has 2026 and 2027 in full, plus part-day and regional holidays.
| Date | Holiday |
|---|---|
| Friday 25 December 2026 | Christmas Day |
| Monday 28 December 2026 | Boxing Day (observed) |
| Friday 1 January 2027 | New Year's Day |
| Tuesday 26 January 2027 | Australia Day |

The list shows whole-day, state-wide holidays only. Check the pay page for any regional or part-day holidays that apply to your workplace.
Payroll tax in Tasmania: when employing minimum-wage staff triggers it
Tasmania payroll tax for 2026-27 starts at $1,250,000 of annual taxable wages, with a headline rate of 4% / 6.1%, administered by State Revenue Office Tasmania. Both thresholds ($1.25 million and $2 million) are apportioned by the Tasmanian share of Australian wages. An employer that chooses not to claim the threshold pays 6.1% on all Tasmanian wages.
On wages alone, $1,250,000 is about 24 full-time adult employees on the minimum wage ($52,255 each). That is our own arithmetic: super and other taxable wages also count, and groups and interstate apportionment change the test, so a real business reaches the threshold sooner. Use the TAS payroll tax page or the payroll tax calculator for a proper estimate, and the employer cost calculator for the full cost of a worker.
Long service leave in Tasmania on the minimum wage
Under the Long Service Leave Act 1976 (Tas), 10 years of continuous service qualifies you to take 8.667 weeks of leave. Private sector Tasmanians get 8⅔ weeks of paid leave after 10 years of continuous employment, then 4⅓ weeks every 5 years. A pro-rata payment may be owed on termination once you have completed 7 but fewer than 10 years, and WorkSafe Tasmania calculates it as your years of continuous employment (including part years) ÷ 10 × 8.667 weeks. At the full-time minimum wage ($1,004.90 a week) 8.667 weeks is worth about $8,709. Part-time and casual employees can be entitled to a pro-rata payment on termination. Absences due to certified illness or injury count as service; maternity leave and industrial-dispute interruptions do not break continuity but do not count as service either, so the time has to be made up. Work out your own entitlement with the TAS long service leave calculator.
