Rates are before tax and for adults. Junior rates, weekend and evening penalty rates are on each employer’s page.

Enterprise agreement or award: why the rates differ

Large employers such as supermarkets and hardware chains usually bargain an enterprise agreement with their staff. It sets its own classifications, rates and penalty structure, and replaces the award while it operates. Fast food franchisees and many pharmacies instead pay the modern award directly, so every store under that award pays at least the same minimum.

An agreement can never pay a base rate below the award rate for the same work. When the annual wage review lifts the award above an agreement’s rate, the employer has to pay the award rate until the agreement catches up. The award minimums are on our retail award rates and hospitality award rates pages, and the age percentages on junior pay rates.

Employer pay rate questions

At entry level for an adult, Qantas pays the most of the employers we cover: $32.20 an hour at Flight Attendant — first to third year. The lowest entry-level adult rate is Guzman y Gomez at $27.81. Weekend and evening penalty rates, which differ between agreements, can change which job pays more for the hours you actually work.

McDonald's, Chemist Warehouse, Subway, IGA, JB Hi-Fi, Hoyts, Domino's, Red Rooster, Harvey Norman, Event Cinemas, Spotlight, Starbucks, Zambrero, Anaconda and Guzman y Gomez staff are paid under a modern award rather than their own enterprise agreement. Awards set a minimum, and each industry's award has its own rates and junior percentages. Supermarket agreements are bargained separately and must leave staff better off overall than the award.

No. Hourly rates are before tax and exclude super. Your employer pays the superannuation guarantee on top of your ordinary time earnings.

Your level (or classification) is printed on your payslip or employment contract. Match it to the table on your employer's page. If it is missing, ask your manager or payroll, or contact the Fair Work Ombudsman on 13 13 94.
How these pages are sourced▼

Each employer page names the agreement or award its figures come from, with the Fair Work Commission reference, the date the rates took effect and the date we read them. Nothing is estimated. Where we could not verify part of an agreement, the page says so rather than filling the gap.
