QLD Public Holidays 2026 & 2027 — Dates + Public Holiday Pay Rates

Queensland has 12 state-wide public holidays in 2026 and 13 in 2027. It also has a part-day public holiday on Christmas Eve from 6pm to midnight, and nearly 100 local show holidays, including the Ekka for Brisbane. Labour Day is in May and the King's Birthday in October, later than in most states.

Direct answer: QLD has 12 whole-day public holidays in 2026 and 13 in 2027, plus part-day holidays from 6pm to midnight. Work one and your award pays 200% to 250% of your base rate (225% to 312.5% for casuals). Full-time and part-time staff who have the day off are still paid their base rate if it falls on a day they normally work.

What you’re paid on a QLD public holiday

The state decides which days are public holidays. Your award or enterprise agreement decides the rate. If you work the day, every hour is paid at the public holiday rate below. If you don’t work it and it falls on a day you normally work, a full-time or part-time employee is paid their base rate for their ordinary hours. Casuals are paid only for hours they work.

You can refuse a request to work a public holiday if the request is unreasonable or you have reasonable grounds. The public holiday pay guide covers refusals, leave and substitute days in full.

Holidays marked “Part of state” are public holidays only where your job is based in that area. Elsewhere in QLD they are ordinary working days.

Christmas Eve: public holiday rates from 6pm

Since 2019 the Holidays Act 1983 has made Christmas Eve a part-day public holiday from 6pm to midnight. Hours before 6pm are ordinary hours at the usual weekday or weekend rate. Hours from 6pm are paid at the public holiday rate. A 2pm to 10pm retail shift on Thursday 24 December 2026 is 4 hours at the usual Thursday rates and 4 hours at the public holiday rate.

Queensland's window starts at 6pm, an hour earlier than the Christmas Eve part-day holidays in South Australia and the Northern Territory.

The Ekka and local show holidays

The Royal Queensland Show holiday, the Ekka, is a Brisbane-area public holiday on the Wednesday of show week: 12 August 2026 and 11 August 2027. In 2026 several councils around Brisbane, including Logan, Moreton Bay and Redland, took the same show holiday on Monday 10 August instead. The rest of the state has its own local show day, appointed district by district.

Your entitlement follows where your job is based. A Brisbane-based employee working in Toowoomba on Ekka Wednesday is still on the Brisbane public holiday.

When Anzac Day moves to Monday

Queensland moves Anzac Day to the following Monday only when 25 April is a Sunday. In 2026 it falls on a Saturday, so Saturday 25 April is the public holiday and there is no Monday holiday. In 2027 it falls on a Sunday, so Monday 26 April is the public holiday.

Your QLD pay, leave and payslip

Public holiday pay is taxed as ordinary income with the rest of your pay. To see what a pay period with a public holiday shift leaves you after tax, use the QLD pay calculator. Long service leave is set by QLD law, not the National Employment Standards; the QLD long service leave calculator works out your entitlement. To check the public holiday line on your payslip, the payslip guide explains each line, and the back pay calculator totals an underpayment.

QLD public holiday pay questions

Partly. Christmas Eve is a public holiday from 6pm to midnight. Hours worked before 6pm are paid at the ordinary rate for that day, and hours from 6pm at the public holiday rate.

No. The Royal Queensland Show holiday on Wednesday 12 August 2026 applies to the City of Brisbane. Logan, Moreton Bay, Redland and several other councils took it on Monday 10 August 2026, and the rest of Queensland has its own local show holidays on other dates.

No. Queensland only moves Anzac Day to the Monday when 25 April is a Sunday. In 2026 it falls on a Saturday, so the Saturday itself is the public holiday. In 2027 the public holiday is Monday 26 April.

It is set by your award or agreement, not by the state. Across the 27 awards on this site a permanent employee is paid 200% to 250% of the base rate for hours worked on a public holiday — 225% under the General Retail and Hospitality awards (250% for casuals). The QLD holiday list decides which days those rates apply to.

Yes, if you are full-time or part-time and the holiday falls on a day you would normally work. Under the National Employment Standards you are paid your base rate for the ordinary hours you would have worked. Casuals are not paid for a public holiday they don't work, and a part-timer who doesn't normally work that weekday gets nothing extra.

12 whole-day public holidays apply across QLD in 2026, starting with New Year's Day on Thursday 1 January 2026, plus 1 part-day holidays, plus regional holidays that apply in part of the state only.

How this page is sourced▼

Every date was read from the Queensland Government’s own public holidays page on 24 September 2026. Each date is stored alongside the text the government prints, and automated tests check the day, month and weekday against it. Where the government has not yet published a date, the page says so instead of estimating it.

Public holiday pay rates are read from the site’s award constants (Fair Work Commission award texts, rates from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026). Rights when not working come from the Fair Work Ombudsman and the Fair Work Act 2009 ss 114–116.
