Jobs and Skills Australia's $2,606 a week median is for all metal fitters and machinists, a group that includes mining maintenance fitters, and the same profile reports an average of 50 hours a week for full-time workers. It reflects overtime and enterprise agreements, not the award minimum.
The penalty and overtime rules below are the Manufacturing Award's. A fitter on a mine site or a construction project follows that award's rules instead.
Which award covers fitters and turners
Fitters and turners employed in manufacturing and engineering workshops are covered by the Manufacturing and Associated Industries and Occupations Award 2020 [MA000010]. A tradesperson with a trade certificate or a Certificate III in Engineering — Mechanical Trade is an Engineering Tradesperson (Mechanical) Level I at wage group C10, the award's trade rate (Schedule A.3.1, A.4.7). The award's vehicle manufacturing stream lists "Fitter and turner" by name at Level V5, which is paid the same as C10 (Schedule B.6.3).
Above C10 the mechanical trade has its own ladder, and each step is tied to post-trade study: C9 needs C10 plus 20% of a Diploma of Engineering, C8 40%, C7 a Certificate IV in Engineering or 60%, C6 (Advanced Engineering Tradesperson Level I) 80% of a Diploma of Engineering — Advanced Trade, and C5 the Diploma itself (Schedule A.3.1). The level depends on the training you hold and the work you are required to do, not on years of service.
The employer's industry decides the award. The Mining Industry Award covers servicing and maintaining mining plant by employees principally working where the mining is done (cl 4.2(d)); a trade-qualified maintenance fitter there is at least Level 3—Competent (Schedule A.3.4). A fitter employed in the metal and engineering construction sector is under the Building and Construction General On-site Award, which lists Fitter at CW/ECW3. Both are in the second table.

What fitters and turners actually earn
Jobs and Skills Australia puts median full-time earnings for Metal Fitters and Machinists (ANZSCO 3232) at $2,606 a week ($60 an hour), against $1,852 a week for all occupations.
Median weekly pay of full-time, non-managerial adult employees before tax and salary sacrifice, from the ABS Survey of Employee Earnings and Hours (May 2025) as published by Jobs and Skills Australia. It reflects what employers actually pay, including people on enterprise agreements or above-award salaries, so it is a market figure, not a legal minimum.
What this page does not show
- Apprentice and adult apprentice rates (cl 21–24).
- Height money, ship repair and the other special rates in cl 30.4 not listed above.
- Rates under the Building and Construction General On-site Award, the Mining Industry Award and enterprise agreements, which can apply instead of this award.
- Vehicle manufacturing employees under Part 9 of the award, who have their own loadings and allowances.
- Mining Industry Award and Building and Construction Award penalty, overtime and allowance rules, which differ from the Manufacturing Award's.

Every minimum rate was read from the Fair Work Commission's consolidated text of the Manufacturing and Associated Industries and Occupations Award 2020, consolidated to 1 July 2026, on 9 October 2026. Casual rates are the award's own published figures wherever it publishes them. Nothing is estimated.
The median comes from Jobs and Skills Australia’s occupation profile and is a market figure, not an entitlement. Take-home figures use the same tax engine as the rest of this site. Award rates change every 1 July, so re-check after the next Annual Wage Review.
