Shift penalties, loadings and allowances

Base salary is not the whole of it: paramedics on rotating rosters are paid extra for shift work. In summary, from the Ambulance Tasmania Industrial Agreement 2025:

  • Remote area allowance: 8% of base salary at Miena, Queenstown, Strahan, Zeehan and King Island (clause 13.2).
  • Rural area allowance: 4% of base salary at listed rural sites including Beaconsfield, Bicheno, Deloraine, George Town and Oatlands (clause 13.3).
  • Annual leave loading for day workers is 17.5% (clause 11.1). Shift and weekend penalties are set by the Ambulance Tasmania Award and are not summarised here.

Check the instrument for the exact conditions that apply to your roster. Overtime is worked out separately — the overtime pay calculator handles time and a half and double time.

What a TAS paramedic salary is worth after tax

Every salary in the tables links to its take-home figure. Start with take-home pay on $79,000 for the entry rate or take-home pay on $101,000 for the top of the scale. Those figures cover base salary only; shift penalties and allowances are taxed as ordinary income on top.

Employer superannuation is paid on top of these salaries. For your own pay including penalties, a study loan or salary packaging, use the take-home pay calculator or the TAS pay calculator.
