Fitness Industry Award Pay Rates by Level
Adult minimum rates for full-time and part-time employees under the Fitness Industry Award 2020. Part-time employees are paid the same hourly rate as full-time employees at their classification — the difference is hours, not rate. The casual column adds the 25% loading (cl 12.1(a); 30% on weekends, cl 12.1(b)).
| Classification level | Weekly (38 hrs) | Hourly | Casual hourly (+25%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | $978.10 | $25.74 | $32.18 |
| Level 2 | $1,004.90 | $26.44 | $33.05 |
| Level 3 | $1,062.90 | $27.97 | $34.96 |
| Level 3A | $1,119.10 | $29.45 | $36.81 |
| Level 4 | $1,165.10 | $30.66 | $38.33 |
| Level 4A | $1,221.10 | $32.13 | $40.16 |

| Level 6 | $1,276.00 | $33.58 | $41.98 |
| Level 7 | $1,325.70 | $34.89 | $43.61 |
Weekly rates are the award’s minimum weekly rate for a full-time employee (cl 15.1); hourly is the weekly rate divided by 38.
Which level am I?
- Level 1: Works under direct supervision with specific instructions: counter and reception duties, tidying and cleaning, assisting higher grades, and structured training.
- Level 2: Has completed the lesser of 456 hours of training or 6 months at Level 1, or holds a swim and water safety teacher or coach qualification, or a Gymnastics Australia Coach Accreditation (Schedule A.2).
- Level 3 and 3A: Works under general supervision within defined areas; includes qualified swimming teachers, pool lifeguards and gymnastics coaches. Level 3A is a Level 3 who holds an AQF Certificate III in Fitness or Sport Coaching.
- Level 4 and 4A: Works under limited supervision; includes senior pool lifeguards. Level 4A is a Level 4 with an AQF Certificate IV, employed as a tennis centre club professional.
- Level 5: Holds an AQF Diploma in Fitness, Management or Sport Coaching and works as a fitness trainer or fitness specialist, able to develop programs for special groups (Schedule A.7).
- Levels 6 and 7: Supervisory roles: Level 6 supervises front desk and floor staff or oversees day-to-day operations; Level 7 supervises, trains and coordinates employees with substantial responsibility (Schedule A.8–A.9).
Casual weekend rates are lower than permanent weekend rates on Sundays
The Fitness Industry Award sets the casual loading at 25% Monday to Friday and 30% on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays (cl 12.1). It does not add a penalty rate on top. So at Level 3 a casual earns $36.36 an hour on a Sunday, while a permanent Level 3 earns $41.96 (150%). Neither casual loading is paid on overtime (cl 12.2). Check your payslip against the casual figures in the tables below.
Worked example: a casual and a permanent employee on a Sunday
Both Alex (casual) and Jo (permanent) are Level 3 employees ($27.97 an hour) and each works 4 ordinary hours on a Sunday.
- Alex, casual: the loading on a Sunday is 30%, so $27.97 × 130% = $36.36 an hour → $145.44.
- Jo, permanent: Sunday is 150%, so $27.97 × 150% = $41.96 an hour → $167.84.
- Alex is paid $22.40 less for the same 4 hours, because the casual loading is the only extra a casual receives and it replaces the leave and notice entitlements they do not get.
Try your own hours in the overtime pay calculator or the casual loading calculator, add up a full week in the weekly pay calculator, or check the public holiday pay guide.

Fitness Industry Award Penalty Rates
| When worked | Full-time / part-time | $ on Level 1 | Casual | $ casual |

| Sunday — ordinary hoursA casual's Sunday rate in Schedule B.2 is below the permanent rate, because the casual loading is the only extra. | 150% | $38.61 | 130% | $33.46 |

Ordinary hours can be worked between 5.00 am and 11.00 pm Monday to Friday and 6.00 am and 9.00 pm on Saturday and Sunday (cl 13.1). Work outside those spans is overtime.
Casual loadings differ by day: 25% Monday to Friday and 30% on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays (cl 12.1). Schedule B.2 therefore shows casuals at 125% on weekdays and 130% on weekends — and a casual's Sunday rate is lower than a permanent employee's 150%.
The casual public holiday rate: cl 26.3(c) points casuals to the 30% loading in cl 12.1(b), and Schedule B.2 lists 130% for Saturday, Sunday and public holidays together. Because that sits so far below the permanent 250%, we do not print a dollar rate for it; confirm with Fair Work before relying on it.
Fitness Industry Award Overtime Rates

Overtime is time outside the spread of hours, over an average of 38 a week over 4 weeks, or over 10 hours on any day (cl 19.1). Casual loadings are not paid on overtime (cl 19.2 NOTE / 12.2).
An employee who has to resume work without a 10-hour break between shifts is paid 200% of the minimum hourly rate until they have had that break (cl 19.3).
Fitness Industry Award Junior Rates
Junior rates are a percentage of the adult rate for the classification (cl 15.2), and apply to the adult rate for the classification appropriate to the work performed. The dollar columns apply the percentage to Level 1 ($978.10 a week) and divide by 38. The full adult rate applies from age 20.
| Age | % of adult rate | Weekly on Level 1 | Hourly | Casual hourly (+25%) |

Minimum Shifts and Hours
- A casual must be engaged for a minimum of 3 hours, but a casual instructor, trainer or tennis coach at Level 2 to 5, or a trainee on practical work, can be engaged for as little as 1 hour (cl 12.3).
- Ordinary hours cannot exceed 10 in a day. A broken shift can have no more than 2 parts, must total at least 3 hours and span no more than 12 hours (cl 13.3–13.4).
- Level 6 is paid less than Level 5 in the award's own table ($1,276.00 against $1,287.20 a week). That is what cl 15.1 says; it reflects how the classifications were merged, not an error on this page.

What This Page Does Not Cover
These parts of the award carry rules or rates we have not verified line by line, so we publish no figures for them:
- The casual public holiday rate (see the penalty notes above)
- Sleepover and broken-shift arrangements beyond the allowance amounts shown (cl 17.3(e))
- National Training Wage (Schedule E of the Miscellaneous Award) trainee rates
An enterprise agreement, if one covers your workplace, replaces these award rates — though it must leave you better off overall.
When These Rates Took Effect
Applies from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2026, not universally 1 July. If your pay period began before 1 July 2026, the previous rate lawfully applies to that whole period and the rise starts with the next one. The award was varied by determination PR799374 following the Annual Wage Review 2026. If you have been paid below these rates, our backpay calculator works out what is owed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Fitness Industry Award questions and answers
What are the fitness industry award pay rates for 2026-27?
Under the Fitness Industry Award 2020 (MA000094), adult minimum rates run from $25.74 an hour ($978.10 a week) for Level 1 to $34.89 an hour ($1,325.70 a week) for Level 7. They apply from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2026.
What is the casual rate under the Fitness Industry Award?
Level 1 is $32.18 an hour as a casual. The loading is 25% on Monday to Friday ordinary hours and 30% on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays (cl 12.1), added to the minimum rate and not on top of a penalty rate, so a casual's weekend rate is 130%. No casual loading is paid on overtime (cl 12.2).
What allowances are paid under the Fitness Industry Award?
The award's allowances clause (cl 17) includes: leading hand — in charge of 1 to 5 employees $31.89 per week; leading hand — in charge of 6 to 10 employees $43.58 per week; leading hand — in charge of more than 10 employees $58.46 per week; broken shift allowance $18.07 per day; first aid allowance $3.40 per day. Allowances are paid on top of the classification rate when the employee meets the clause's conditions.
What are the junior rates under the Fitness Industry Award?
Junior rates are a percentage of the adult rate for the classification (cl 15.2): Under 17 55%, 17 65%, 18 75%, 19 85%. The full adult rate applies from age 20. They apply to the adult rate for the classification appropriate to the work performed.
When did the new fitness industry award rates start?
Applies from the first full pay period starting on or after 1 July 2026, not universally 1 July. The MA000094 rates were varied by determination PR799374 following the Annual Wage Review 2026. If your pay period started before 1 July 2026, the old rate lawfully applies to that whole period.
What is the Fitness Industry Award Saturday and Sunday rate?
Permanent and part-time staff are paid 125% on a Saturday and 150% on a Sunday for ordinary hours — $32.18 and $38.61 at Level 1. Casuals are paid 130% on both days ($33.46 at Level 1). Public holidays are 250% for permanent staff ($64.35 at Level 1).
What casual rate applies on a public holiday?
The award sends casuals working a public holiday to the 30% casual loading in cl 12.1(b) (cl 26.3(c)), and Schedule B.2 lists 130% for Saturday, Sunday and public holidays together. That is far below the 250% permanent rate, so confirm the figure with your pay guide or the Fair Work Infoline before relying on it. We do not print a public holiday dollar rate for casuals.
What are overtime rates in the Fitness Industry Award?
Overtime is 150% for the first 2 hours Monday to Saturday and 200% after that, 200% on Sunday and 250% on a public holiday — $38.61 and $51.48 at Level 1. Overtime is anything outside 5.00 am to 11.00 pm Monday to Friday and 6.00 am to 9.00 pm on weekends, over 10 hours a day, or over an average of 38 a week over 4 weeks.
Which level is a swimming teacher, lifeguard or personal trainer?
A swim and water safety teacher with a qualification is at least Level 2, rising to Level 3 and 4 with teaching hours and further qualifications; a pool lifeguard is Level 3 and a senior pool lifeguard Level 4; a fitness trainer or fitness specialist holding an AQF Diploma is Level 5 (Schedule A). Disputes about swimming teacher or coach classification can go to the Fair Work Commission.
How these rates were verified▼
Every figure comes from one constants file transcribed on 5 October 2026 from the Fair Work Commission’s consolidated MA000094 award text, which incorporates all amendments up to and including 1 July 2026 (PR799280, PR799374 and PR799529). Clause numbers are cited against each table. Hourly is the published weekly rate divided by 38; derived dollar figures are rounded half up to the cent.
Automated tests pin the published rates, check every hourly rate against its weekly rate, and assert the rules this award is most often modelled wrongly on — including which casual penalties add the loading and which compound on the casual rate. Parts of the award we have not verified are listed as gaps rather than estimated.
