Check the date on any Tasmanian salary table you are shown. As at 28 August 2026 the department's own web summary table and the consolidated Teaching Service Award both still end at the 1 March 2025 rates. The current rates are in Schedule 2 of the Teachers Agreement 2025, and those are what is published below.
Band 1 Level 13, Advanced Skills Teacher and Assistant Principal each received a flat structural adjustment ($500, $400 and $250) before the 3% rise was applied on 1 March 2026, so those three rows are not a straight 3% on the previous year.
Which agreement sets TAS teacher pay
Tasmania public school teacher salaries are set by the Teachers Agreement 2025, the instrument the Tasmanian Department for Education, Children and Young People pays against. The rates below took effect from the first full pay period commencing on or after 1 March 2026 and were read from that instrument on 28 August 2026.
Next scheduled increase: 1 March 2027. A further 3% from the first full pay period commencing on or after 1 March 2027, then 2.75% from 1 March 2028 — both already written into clause 8.1. The 2027 rise takes Band 1 Level 1 to $77,115 and Level 13 to $126,065.
These are the government (public) school scales. Catholic systemic and independent schools in Tasmania negotiate their own agreements and are not covered here.

Advanced Skills Teacher, assistant principal and deputy principal
Everything above Band 1 Level 13 is a promotion: an advertised vacancy at Band 2 or above, filled on merit.

School-based principals — Levels 1 to 6

Which step am I on?
This is the part most teachers get wrong on their own payslip. Progression in Tasmania is not simply one step per calendar year — the rules below are what the Tasmanian Department for Education, Children and Young People actually applies.
You move on your anniversary, not on a common date
Progression within Band 1 occurs on the anniversary date of your appointment, based on an assessment against the requirements set in your performance management plan for the previous 12 months plus certification that performance has been satisfactory.
Leave without pay, or a break in service of more than three months, does not count toward continuous service — so either will push your increment date out.
Your entry level depends on how long you trained
The award sets the graduate entry level for four and five year trained teachers at Band 1 Level 5, which is $85,313 — three levels and about $10,000 above where a three-year-trained teacher starts.
Three year trained teachers enter at Band 1 Level 1 and work up through the same ladder.
The performance management plan is the mechanism
The plan must list the performance outcomes and specific requirements, be reviewed annually with at least one discussion between you and your principal, cover your training and development needs, and include a clear statement of outcomes.
That plan is what your increment is assessed against — so it is worth knowing what is in yours before your anniversary.
An increment can be deferred, but only after a real process
The employer may defer or refuse to advance a teacher only if the principal has counselled the employee and clearly explained the criteria that must be met, has provided every opportunity through mentoring, guidance and support, and has allowed at least three months before the decision is taken.
Level 13 needs full registration
Clause 9 of the Teachers Agreement 2025: you are eligible for Band 1 Level 13 provided you have been at Level 12 for 12 months or more and hold full teacher registration certified by the Teachers Registration Board.
If you have the 12 months at Level 12 but not yet full registration, progression happens from the date the TRB certifies it.
Above Level 13, it is promotion only
The award defines a promotable position as duties classified higher than Band 1 Level 13. Getting one means an advertised vacancy at Band 2 or above and selection on merit — there is no incremental path from Level 13 into Advanced Skills Teacher or Assistant Principal.
Checking your payslip: find the classification code on your payslip, match it to the first column of the tables above, and compare the annual figure. If your gross fortnightly pay does not divide back to the annual salary for your step, you are either on the wrong step or being paid pro rata on a time fraction. The TAS pay calculator will convert an annual salary to fortnightly for you.
What a TAS teacher salary is worth after tax
Gross salary is not what lands in your account. A graduate on $74,869 and a top-of-scale teacher on $122,393 both pay income tax and the Medicare levy, and most also have a compulsory HECS-HELP repayment deducted at these income levels. Every salary in the tables above links to its take-home figure — start with take-home pay on $75,000 or take-home pay on $120,000.
Superannuation sits on top of these salaries rather than inside them. Check the exact figure for your own step with the take-home pay calculator, and if you have a study debt the HECS repayment calculator shows what comes out at your income.
Salary packaging available to TAS teachers
Public school teachers can salary sacrifice into superannuation, which reduces taxable income at your marginal rate. Because the classroom teacher scale runs through the 30% and 37% brackets, the saving is meaningful at the top of the scale and smaller at the graduate step. Work out your own number with the salary sacrifice calculator.
Salary sacrificing also lowers the income your compulsory HECS-HELP repayment is assessed on only in limited cases — reportable fringe benefits and reportable super contributions are added back for that test. If you are packaging, check the effect on repayment income before assuming a saving.
What this page does not show
We publish only what we could read from a primary source. These are deliberately left off rather than estimated:
- Education Support Specialist, Specialist VET Teacher and Instrumental Musician scales — separate classifications rather than the teacher scale, so they are not shown here.
- The doubled Level 9 and Level 10 increments that apply to some three-year-trained teachers (shown as Year 1 / Year 2 on the department's scales), which are a transitional arrangement rather than a distinct salary.
For anything in that list, go to the Tasmanian Department for Education, Children and Young People.

How this page is sourced▼
Every salary on this page was read from the Teachers Agreement 2025 or from the Tasmanian Department for Education, Children and Young People’s own published salary schedule on 28 August 2026, and applies from the first full pay period commencing on or after 1 March 2026. Nothing is estimated, averaged or interpolated: a step we could not read from a primary source is listed under “What this page does not show” rather than filled in.
State scales step up on dates written into the agreement, so re-check after the next scheduled increase. Take-home figures come from the site’s own calculator using ATO rates; because those pages exist in $5,000 steps, a salary that is not a round $5,000 links to the nearest one and says so.
